ExxonMobil is one of the largest energy conglomerates across the world, operating numerous refineries. However, a number of serious injuries have occurred in their plants, including in Baytown, Texas. Consider some examples.

ExxonMobil Explosion in December 2021

One such event occurred at 1 am at the ExxonMobil Olefins Plant in Baytown in December. Four people suffered serious injuries, including three with second and third-degree burns. Another person suffered a broken leg. It is not clear what caused the accident, but the released information indicated it occurred in the gas-producing unit.

ExxonMobil Olefins Plant in July 2019

The ExxonMobil Olefins Plant also suffered a serious incident in July 2019 when an explosion occurred on a recovery unit within the facility. Over 40 people had to go to the hospital with a range of injuries, some of which were serious.

This plant is incredibly large, considered the second-largest refining operation in the United States, right along the Houston Ship Channel. The Baytown Complex, which is over 3,400 acres, is both a chemical plant and a refinery. It is unclear what caused this accident.

ExxonMobil Baytown Complex in March of 2019

Another incident took place on March 16, 2019, when a furnace caught fire at the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex. The blast was so powerful that it sent plumes of flames and smoke throughout Houston. Luckily, no one was injured in this incident.

Officials investigated the accident and found that the site released toxic chemicals into the Houston air for 8 days, potentially contaminating the area and exposing residents to disease-causing chemicals. Those emissions included multiple air pollutants. The company was in violation of the Texas Clean Air Act.

Baytown Complex in December of 2017

A worker lost their life in December 2017 when a pipe fell and struck her in the head. The victim was not an employee of the company but rather an employee of Echo Maintenance, LLC, which was contracted by the Baytown Complex management to handle construction and maintenance tasks at the location.

Common Industrial Injuries

The Baytown complex is one of the most important in the Houston industry, but it is also a dangerous location, as these examples show. Some of the most common industrial injuries suffered at this plant and others nearby include:

  • Thermal and chemical burns from explosions and fires
  • Traumatic brain injuries resulting from falls and being hit by equipment
  • Spinal cord injuries suffered in falls
  • Broken bones with complex fractures
  • Lung damage from toxin inhalation, especially over a long period of time

Loss of life is also not uncommon in these situations. Victims face a complicated recovery process, one that is riddled with treatments and long-term suffering.
