On June 14, 2025, a fire started around noon at Marathon’s Galveston Bay refinery, according to Reuters. No injuries were reported during the incident.
In the days following the incident, Marathon assessed damage to the RHU involved in the fire. This unit uses hydrogen to extract motor fuel feedstocks from crude oil and remove sulfur in accordance with U.S. environmental rules.
On May 15, 2023, at around 9:30 a.m., a fire was reported at Marathon’s Galveston Bay refinery, per Houston Public Media. A refinery employee was killed in the fire.
Marathon extinguished the fire by 2 p.m. A company spokesperson told Houston Public Media that the safety of its employees and the community was the business’ top priority and that an investigation would be conducted to determine the incident’s cause.
Marathon said that an employee died in an electric shock accident at its Galveston Bay refinery on February 28, 2023, KTRK reported. No further details have been released about what led to the incident.
Following the fatal incident, a Marathon spokesperson told KTRK that safety is a top priority at its facilities. They also stated that an investigation would be used to find out the cause of the accident.
The Marathon Galveston Bay refinery is staffed by approximately 1,500 full-time employees. It can process crude oils into distillates, gasoline, natural gas liquids, petrochemicals, heavy fuel oil, and propane. These products can be distributed via barge, transport truck, pipeline, rail, and ocean tanker.
Marathon refinery has a co-generation facility with a 1,055 MW of electrical production capacity. This facility is capable of producing 4.3 million lbs. of steam per hour.
The health and safety of Marathon’s employees and contractors is “of paramount concern,” per the company. Marathon says that it is committed to creating a safe workplace for its employees. At the same time, the business notes that it wants to minimize its impact on the environment.
