A massive explosion happened this morning just after 7 a.m. CST at a chemical plant in Shepherd, Texas. The chemical plant is believed to be, Sound Chemical Solutions. The explosion has caused a huge plume of smoke having about a 5-mile radius, closing Highway 59 at this time. The Precinct 2 Constable of San Jacinto County says the impacted building is a petroleum processing plant. The San Jacinto County Office of Emergency Management has advised nearby residents to shelter in place and turn off all air conditioning systems. A private school on FM 1127 has been safely evacuated at this time.

At this time, it is unclear what triggered the explosion. Fox 26 Houston has reported at least one person has suffered burn injuries. An emergency management official said the following regarding the chemical plant in a news release, “known to have acute toxicity, carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity, and may cause serious eye damage or eye irritation, skin corrosion or irritation, aspiration hazard, and organ toxicity.” The effects of the chemicals in the air are unknown currently.
