An explosion rocked the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas on Monday evening, sending a massive plume of black smoke and fire skyward and prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Videos shared on social media quickly showed towering flames and a thick column of dark smoke rising from the facility.
Sheriff Zena Stephens indicated the explosion was likely triggered by an industrial heater malfunction. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene as authorities worked to assess the scope of the incident.
Port Arthur police issued a shelter-in-place advisory for residents on the west side of the city, as well as for Sabine Pass and Pleasure Island. Residents in those areas were urged to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and limit exposure to outdoor air until the all-clear was given. These precautions are standard protocol when an industrial incident has the potential to release hazardous materials or airborne toxins into the surrounding community.
It is also being reported that road closures are in effect for Highway 82 and Highway 87.
