At approximately 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3rd, a significant fire erupted at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo. Flames and smoke billowed in the sky. Despite the fact that the blaze could be seen for miles, authorities were quick to announce that there was no threat to the general public.
The cause of the refinery fire is still under investigation. The Chevron refinery covers approximately one and a half square miles of land, with more than a thousand miles of pipelines. While it is not yet known what caused this fire to break out, the refinery has suffered similar incidents in the past. ABC7 reports that there have been “at least four other fires at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo since 2016.” To date, there have been no injuries or deaths associated with incidents at the refinery.
Emergency crews were quick to respond to the Chevron refinery fire and successfully contained the flames to one side of the facility shortly after their arrival. At least one tank at the refinery was still burning hours after the initial blaze broke out. Local residents of El Segundo expressed horror and shock at the incident, stating that the initial fire sounded like “a plane about to crash” and felt like a massive earthquake. A monitoring system at the refinery indicates that the fire was fully contained to the facility and no evacuation orders were issued. Flights into nearby Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) were not affected.
